Organizational Development is the systematic process of investing in and enhancing an organization’s ability to perform. One of the early definitions comes from Richard Beckhard in Organization Development: Strategies and Models (1969) and includes these elements: 

  • Planned

  • Organization-wide

  • Managed from the top

  • Increases organization effectiveness and health

  • Works through planned interventions in the organization’s ‘processes,’ using behavioral-science knowledge.

At DeEtta Jones and Associates, our strength is that we bring an equity lens to “traditional management” models and practices. Our approach incorporates, with the traditional OD elements, acknowledgement that there are systems, structures and legacy culture that sometimes create barriers to inclusion and compete with our aspirations for the future. 

Our work with clients includes understanding social and organizational structures, identification of the desired future state, and active pursuit of alternatives that reflect shared values. We bring process expertise to ensure that OD efforts are implemented for maximum effectiveness. Our emphasis is in the “how” of any process--from strategic planning to change management. 

For example, people from non-dominant social groups (such as individual contributors as compared with managers) are brought into change efforts at the earliest stages. Who would be in a better position than workers to give perspective about barriers to employee engagement, share ideas about dealing with burnout or low morale, or offer suggestions about new market penetration. Perhaps even  more important, intentional and inclusive OD enables knowledge transfer across classifications and various divisions of an organization, and ensures that key stakeholders have a sense of shared ownership needed for successful implementation of strategy.
