Meet DeEtta Jones
Speaker. Organizational Strategist. Systems Designer.
DeEtta Jones helps leaders understand what it actually takes for organizations — and the people inside them — to perform, adapt, and move forward.
For more than 30 years, she has worked with executives and organizations through the work that rarely unfolds according to plan: strategy, organizational change, leadership transitions, restructures, culture shifts, and the everyday challenge of turning good intentions into coordinated action. She has personally advised more than 200 executives and worked with organizations including the CDC, the U.S. Department of Labor, Microsoft, Edelman, and IPG.
She is the author of The State of Organizational Capacity Report, an annual examination of where organizations are strong, where they are stretched, and what their ambitions are asking of them. She designs the assessments and conducts the research behind it. Her leadership and management programs have reached tens of thousands of people worldwide.
DeEtta brings that same combination of research and real-world practice to the stage. Her talks are shaped to the people in the room, candid about the realities of organizational life, and deeply practical. She has a particular gift for giving language to things people have experienced but haven't quite known how to name — and then helping them see what to do about them.

Speaking Topics
Organizations Are Always Becoming: How to lead in a world that never stops changing
We often manage change as though organizations move from one stable state to another. They don't. Organizations are living systems inside constructed systems — constantly responding to new people, expectations, technologies, pressures, opportunities, and losses. DeEtta helps audiences rethink change not as an interruption to normal organizational life, but as a condition of it — and explores the capacity leaders and organizations need to remain effective while continually becoming.
The Organization You Designed Isn't the Organization People Experience: What leaders miss about culture, capacity, and performance
Every organization has two versions: the one represented by its structures, strategies, policies, and org charts — and the one people actually experience. The distance between those two explains a remarkable amount about performance. DeEtta shows leaders how to see the organization as a system, recognize where capacity is being created or depleted, and identify what may actually be getting in the way of the results they want.
Before You Decide, Decide How You'll Decide: Why decision-making may be the most overlooked infrastructure in your organization
Many problems blamed on communication, culture, or resistance are actually decision problems. People don't know who decides, where their input matters, whether a conversation is still open, or what happens after they contribute. DeEtta makes the invisible architecture of organizational decision-making visible — and shows how clearer decision processes can strengthen trust, speed, participation, and execution.
Be Careful What You Ask For: Participation creates expectations. Make sure you're prepared for what comes next.
Organizations routinely ask people for their ideas, feedback, priorities, and perspectives. But asking is not neutral. Participation creates expectations about influence, response, and what happens next. DeEtta explores the difference between performative engagement and genuinely generative organizations — where people's ideas, energy, experience, and ownership increase the collective capacity of the whole.
Your Strategy Has a Capacity Requirement: Why good strategy fails when organizations aren't built to carry it
A strategy doesn't execute itself. Every strategic ambition makes demands on leadership, people, structures, decision-making, resources, relationships, and the organization's ability to learn and adapt. DeEtta helps leaders look beyond whether a strategy is compelling to ask a more consequential question: Do we have the organizational capacity to do what we just said we're going to do?
Managers Are Where Strategy Becomes Real: The organizational layer we ask everything of — and often equip the least
Managers sit at the intersection of strategy, culture, performance, change, and people's everyday experience of work. They translate decisions they didn't make, manage competing priorities they didn't create, and are expected to keep people motivated through all of it. DeEtta explores what organizations need from managers now — and what managers need from organizations if we expect them to deliver.
